About
Westonby Lodge
Westonby Lodge is more than just a stay; it’s an experience of tranquility and comfort
in one of England’s most picturesque settings.
Welcome to Westonby Lodge, a spacious former hunting lodge set in the stunning
Esk Valley, with views over the
North York Moors National Park.
Ideal for a family or group of up to eight people, this cottage is perfectly placed for exploring the Moors and is just a short drive from the coastal towns of Whitby and Scarborough.
Westonby Lodge is accessed via a private driveway with plenty of parking and space for bike storage. Inside, you’ll find a contemporary kitchen with all the essentials, including a Rangemaster cooker.
The dining area comfortably seats everyone, and the living room, with its woodburning stove and Smart TV, is great for relaxing evenings in.
Westonby Lodge is a place steeped in history and brimming with charm! Originally, this retreat was the hub of hunting expeditions for the Lord of the Manor and his friends. When returning from driven grouse or pheasant shoots, the surrounding pine shelterbelts or avenues would have been the main approach to the lodge.
The first floor was originally constructed as one large room that would have been used for feasting or entertaining guests. The stone buildings would have housed the horses and dogs associated with such sports.
Latterly the steading was used as a farm and has been altered to provide accommodation for pigs, horses, poultry, sheep, beef cattle and dairy cattle. The last tenant (a close relation of the current owners) used Westonby Lodge as a primary holding in the 1970s, the lodge accommodated turkeys, a cobbler’s shop, and 9 children!
But what truly sets Westonby Lodge apart is its special place in television history. It’s been a featured location in numerous episodes of the beloved ITV show, Heartbeat. So, for all you Heartbeat fans out there, this is your chance to step into the world of your favourite show right here at Westonby Lodge! You can see the lodge here, featuring in an episode starring the talented Tricia Penrose as Gina Ward and Murray Head as Jack Hollins.
In recent years, our family took the reins from Mulgrave Estate, becoming the proud owners of this wonderful property in March 2020. We’ve been tending to the land surrounding the lodge for five generations, preserving its rich history.
Our cosy guest rooms are designed with a nod to the lodge’s past and offer stunning views. We’re here to help make your visit memorable – please don’t hesitate to contact us should you need anything during your stay.
With a warm welcome,
Emma and Chris Foster
